Astana leader back in Italy for first time since 2010 Giro

Alexandr Vinokourov (Astana) will make his 2012 European race debut at the Settimana Internazionale di Coppi e Bartali at the end of March. The Kazakhstani rider begins his season later this month at the Tour of Langkawi in Malaysia, but surprisingly Coppi e Bartali will mark Vinokourov’s first race on Italian soil since the 2010 Giro d’Italia – a race he led for several days.

Astana’s Team Manager Giuseppe Martinelli said: “Vinokourov has seldom raced in Italy and he wants to use this appearance at the Coppi–Bartali to pay tribute to the country. I hope his many fans will line the routes of the five stages to cheer him on and reciprocate Alexander’s fondness for Italy.”

Vinokourov will be assisted over the five days of the Coppi–Bartali by Astana directeur sportif Alexandr Shefer, currently on duty at the Tour Méditerranéen. Speaking more directly about Vinokourov’s prospects for the race, Shefer said: “He is training a lot at the moment and is managing his fitness meticulously so that he reaches peak condition in April and May. He seems to have made a full recovery after his serious injury at the Tour de France last year so now there is nothing left to do but see how he reacts, firstly at the Tour of Langkawi in Malaysia and then at the Coppi–Bartali. This will help us gauge whether he has regained racing form and see how he is feeling.”

2012 is set to be Vinokourov’s final season after a long and controversial career. His sentimental Italian swan song matches his plans to race Langkawi, a race that he stood out in and helped launch his career in 1997.

The new shop is in the city’s Fremont neighborhood and is attached to the company’s warehouse.

Recycled Cycles opened its first shop in 1994 on Boat Street in Seattle’s University District, selling reconditioned bicycles but later expanding into new bikes as well. Recycled Cycles Fremont promises to maintain the selection of new and used bikes and parts from the company’s primary University District location, but on a smaller scale. The 2,500-square-foot retail space will also have a full-service repair shop.

“I am excited for this next chapter in Recycled Cycles’ growth,” said co-owner Steve Donahue. “It’s hard to believe how far we’ve come since those early days in the basement of Boat Street, but our crew has been working hard to make this happen.”

A grand opening is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 15.

Patrice Ciprelli, the husband and coach of legendary French cyclist Jeannie Longo, admitted purchasing the
banned performance-booster EPO on Thursday, but insisted it was for ‘his personal use’.

“Patrice Ciprelli admits buying EPO for his own personal use because he has
been the subject of repeated cycling accidents these last few years,” his
lawyer Pierre Albert told Bicycle.net.

“He hid them from Jeannie. He didn’t want her to see them.”

French police on Wednesday arrested Ciprelli over the alleged purchase of
the banned performance-enhancing drug EPO (erythropoietin).

They also confirmed that police had spent several hours searching the
couple’s chalet at the village of Saint-Martin-Le-Vinoux near here.

The 53-year-old Longo was not detained along with her husband, although a
friend of Ciprelli, Michel Lucatelli, who is the head of the French skicross
team, was.

The police operation was part of an investigation into Ciprelli’s
activities launched last September.

This followed a report in L’Equipe newspaper alleging that Ciprelli had
bought Chinese-made samples of the banned blood-booster EPO in April 2007,
using a US website and with the help of retired US cyclist Joe Papp, who was
banned for doping himself.

The French Cycling Federation subsequently banned Ciprelli, but he took the
case to court and the ban was overturned in October.

Longo, who is widely expected to retire after the London Olympics in 2012,
is a 59-time national champion who has won the women’s Tour de France three
times and who enjoys huge popularity in her own country.

She has won a total of 30 medals from the Olympics and world championships
combined.

There has never been any proof that the athlete ever saw or used the banned
drugs in question.

Adjusting training after Thyroid problems

Hi,

I have just been diagnosed with a under active thyroid am on medication and this seems to be working, however I am not training or working at the moment. Can I do anything with my diet to help me from being overtired when I resume training .I am 53 yrs old and try to 150 Mlles a week, plus my full time job.

Regards,

John.

Scott Saifer says:

Hi John,

Most people need a few months to get their thyroid medication dose adjusted. Work closely with your doctor to get the dose that makes you feel most normal. Once your thyroid dose is adjusted, your dietary needs are the same as any other person or athlete.

Resting and sickness

Hi,

After being told to rest by the doctor – I have a cold – I am reluctantly following orders. I wonder though, what do elite athletes do when they have an impending event (race/tour) and become ill with a cold a few weeks before. Do they train through it, or is it also best for them to rest?

Thanks,

Tim

Scott Saifer says:

Hi Tim,

Your doctor is right. Smart pros rest when they are sick, and most of them are smart or they wouldn’t be pros. resting a few weeks before a big event is actually a good idea anyway, though not necessarily as deep resting as you would do when sick. If you are feeling at all worn out, achy or exhausted, don’t exercise at all. Exercise takes energy away from fighting hte germs and getting you healthy, delaying your recovery. If you feel pretty good except for a sniffle or cough, it’s okay to do some short, light exercise, like a 30-45 minute ride at less than 70% of maximum heart rate.

Pedaling style

Panel,

I’ve read quite a few articles on how to determine one’s pedal style and I seem to be a ‘heels down’ type. I recently moved my cleats back a tad to compensate and this feels optimal, but with one weird observation: It feels like that I am pushing my glutes back into the saddle when I come over the top of the stroke almost as if I rely on the rearward bracing of my seat to apply proper force. Is this normal for heels down people or is my saddle position just that far off?

Thanks,

Karsten

Steve Hogg says:

G’day Karsten,

There are 2 issues here. Firstly, the change is recent and you probably haven’t modified your motor pattern (muscle firing sequence) to accommodate the change yet. I would advise not changing anything else for a couple of weeks as it takes this long for old motor patterns to be broken down and new ones to become embedded. How long is individually variable but can be hastened by only riding at low to moderate intensity. Anything above approximately 75 per cent of max HR and you will attempt to fall back into patterns of motion that you are used to, but that won’t work perfectly because you have altered your cleat position.

Additionally, read the advice given here.

If after a week or two, the issue you describe doesn’t feel natural, then the likely culprits for your need to shove back off the top of the stroke are:

-Seat height too low
-Cranks too long
-Seat too far forward

If you run into trouble, let me know and I will attempt to advise further!
